Notes
Second child of Mick and Ellen Vaughan. Born 4 May 1880 at Quarry Rd, Thomondgate. Drowned on 15 July 1886 aged 6 years and 2 months — reported in the Limerick Chronicle of that date under 'drowning accident' [limerick-chronicle-1886-mary]. The family's oral memory had her at 7 years; the primary-source paper corrects this to 6y2m. She is the ONLY Vaughan child drowning indexed anywhere in 170 years of Limerick newspaper records (the Local Studies obituary database covers 34,329 entries from 1781 to 1951). The second Mary in the family (1.7, b. 24 Aug 1886) was born six weeks AFTER this Mary's drowning and almost certainly named in her memory — the classic 19th-century pattern of re-using the name of a child lost in childhood. The inquest on a drowning death was mandatory under Irish law; a follow-up inquest report is expected in the Limerick Chronicle 20 or 22 July 1886 editions.
